Nutrition Tips: People with Diabetes
People with Diabetes should see a registered dietitian when diabetes is first diagnosed.
When a new doctor changes your treatment plan, or twice a year for a routine review of your meal plan and goal, you should see your registered dietitian more often if you want to improve your diabetes control, your lifestyle or schedule changes, nutritional needs keep changing, you’ve begun an exercise program or had a change in diabetes medication, when you feel bored, frustrated, or unmotivated to use your meal plan, when you have unexplained high and low blood glucose levels, concerned about weight or blood fat levels, when you develop nutritional related complications, such as high blood pressure or kidney disease.
Eat healthy foods such as:
- Grains
- Beans
- Vegetables
- Fruits
- Low-fat Milk
- Meat
Avoid foods and drinks with a lot of added sugar like:
- Soda
- Desserts
- Candy
Avoid fatty foods:
- Fried foods
- Lunch meats
- Gravy
- Salad dressings
It is important to eat about the same amount of food at the same time each day. Do not eat one or two large meals. Try to eat at least three small meals in a day, especially if you’re under diabetes medication.
You may also need a snack between meals and before you go to bed and avoid drinking alcohol.
